MCVB is committed to leading and supporting green initiatives in the Business Events industry, and within the last year has undertaken a series of environmental and Convention Bureau firsts.
MCVB Event Carbon Calculator
Creating the MCVB Event Carbon Calculator – an online tool powered by the Carbon Reduction Institute which calculates the carbon emissions of events held in Melbourne or Victoria, and offers advice on offsetting carbon emissions, and reducing the carbon footprint of events.
MCVB Green Incentive Travel Website
Launching a ‘green’, low carbon impact incentive travel website, allowing planners to make an educated choice in their procurement and planning process. The site includes Victoria’s top 10 green incentive activities, low carbon impact itineraries and advice on planning a green Business Event in Melbourne.
Advice on Planning a Green Event
Publishing a ‘Guide to Planning a Green Event’ in the MCVB Melbourne Planner’s Guide. A first for the Planner’s Guide, the Green Event Guide includes information on MCVB’s assistance in planning green incentive travel programs, a green events checklist and information on green leisure activities in Victoria.
Creating a green logo, identifying members who have contributed to MCVB’s Melbourne’s ‘Green Credentials’ Report, and who have therefore reported on their environmentally responsible initiatives. The green logo is featured in many MCVB promotional and event planning materials, including on the ‘Find a Supplier’ section of MCVB’s website, and in the Melbourne Planner’s Guide.
Melbourne’s ‘Green Credentials’ Report
Publishing the Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Report which identifies Business Events suppliers’ green initiatives. The Report, launched in 2008, was the first by an Australian Bureau and is now updated annually. The 2010 Report saw a 20% increase in the number of participating businesses, with major improvements including an increase in the number of audits conducted and environmental plans developed (up 18%), an increase in the creation of ‘green teams’ or committees dedicated to guiding initiatives (up 17%), and an increase in the number of businesses offsetting their own carbon emissions or offering carbon offset opportunities to their clients (up 12%).
Carbon Calculation Research
Commissioning research into carbon calculation and carbon offset companies offering services to the Business Events industry. The research, undertaken by Victoria University’s Centre for Tourism and Services Research, identified that best practice carbon offset companies provide carbon footprint assessments, strategies to mitigate and offset carbon emissions, and certification for marketing purposes. MCVB Exhibitions and Roadshows
Continuing to set new environmental benchmarks for events held in Australia (including the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo) and abroad (namely MCVB’s Asia Roadshow), by running these as low carbon impact events.
