New Hotel Developments in Melbourne
The Ascott Group has invested AUD$136.2 million in the development of a 380-unit serviced residence in Melbourne’s CBD. Citadines Melbourne on Bourke is Ascott's first Citadines in Australia and opened on 1 July 2010. Located close to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the contemporary property offers five meeting rooms and a break-out space.
Melbourne’s newest luxury hotel group – Art Series Hotel Group – opened The Cullen in Prahran, Melbourne in November 2009. The Olsen opened in March 2010 in South Yarra with 229 five-star suites complemented by a day spa, two restaurants and a spectacular glass bottom pool. The third hotel in the series, The Blackman, is scheduled to open in Melbourne in August 2010.
As well as new developments, some of Melbourne’s most trusted hotel brands have completed or are undergoing refurbishments. The Rialto Hotel in Collins Street finished a AUD$60 million refurbishment in March 2009 and joined the Intercontinental family. The historic 10-storey 5-star hotel has 253 rooms and stylish, new restaurant and bar spaces.
The Grand Hyatt undewent a AUD $45 million redevelopment of its public foyers, lobbies and bar and dining spaces in early 2009, and is now complemented by a luxury retail precinct. Additionally, the hotel commenced a guest room refurbishment program in October 2009. The full refurbishment will include new carpets, furniture and bathroom fixtures, and will be completed by 2011.
Designer 5-star boutique hotel, Royce, has announced a multi-million dollar development expected to begin in 2011. The purchase of a next door property, with a size of more than 500 square metres, will add 80 contemporary rooms and a luxurious spa centre to the stylish facility. The development is expected to be completed within 12 to 18 months. The current ballroom will be extended to seat 250 people for sit-down dinners.
Meanwhile, The Sebel & Citigate Albert Park Melbourne completed a multi-million dollar refurbishment in early 2009, with a complete overhaul of the guestrooms in the Sebel (4.5-star) and Citigate (4-star).
