Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Report
Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Report shows increase in Melbourne's Business Events industry's green initiatives
The Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB) is committed to leading and supporting green initiatives in the Business Events industry in Australia.
As a part of this commitment, MCVB launched the Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Report in 2008, to identify green initiatives undertaken by Melbourne's leading suppliers to the Business Event industry.
The first of its kind to be commissioned by an Australian Convention Bureau, the Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Report shows that Melbourne is well equipped to meet the industry's growing demands for low carbon impact conventions, meetings, incentive travel programs and events.
One year on from the launch of the report, the 2009 Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Report shows that, in addition to attracting a 182% increase in the number of businesses participating in the audit, Melbourne and Victoria's leading accommodation and transport providers, caterers and venues have undertaken many new and exciting initiatives, particularly recycling initiatives, to further reduce the Business Events industry's environmental impact.
Key findings of the report include that participating Business Events suppliers have seen the following increases in the last year:
- 53% increase in recycling;
- 29% increase in the use of energy efficient light globes;
- 16% increase in the use of water tanks, and;
- 11% increase in the number of Business Events suppliers belonging to an accredited 'green' programme, including the Green Globe Certification programme.

It is envisaged that the report will be updated annually to identify examples of landmark environmental practices undertaken in both the city and state, in order to strengthen the case for hosting Business Events in Melbourne and Victoria as destinations committed to reducing the impact of Business Events on the environment.
