The Grampians
The Grampians region, with its ancient and expansive landscapes, has stunning vistas, unspoilt natural beauty, diverse wildlife and tranquil surrounds.
The Grampians National Park features spectacular rocky outcrops, Koori heritage trails, and Victoria's largest collection of rock art. It's also home to 200 bird species and there are 40 walking tracks on offer, from gentle strolls to challenging hikes. To survey the beauty of the region, walk the trail joining Mount Sturgeon and Mount Abrupt, the highest peak in the southern Grampians.
At Brambuk, the National Park and Cultural Centre, learn about local Aboriginal history and culture. There are about 60 Aboriginal rock art sites with more than 4,000 different motifs. The award-winning National Park and Cultural Centre in Halls Gap gives rich insights into the Aboriginal connection with the surrounding area. Off the beaten track, there are more than 50 sign-posted bushwalking trails. And for those who like to sleep under the stars, this is a camper's paradise, while nearby towns offer numerous accommodation options.
The more adventurous can try rock climbing or take to the skies in a hot air balloon. Mt Arapiles, near Horsham, is an internationally-renowned rock climbing destination. Little Desert National Park, near the South Australian border, is home to the rare Malleefowl and in spring hosts a spectacular array of wildflowers.
Don't miss the historic wine regions of the Grampians and Pyrenees, which produce some of Australia's finest sparkling wines. Sample what the cellar has on offer at Seppelt and Best's at Great Western. Treat yourself to fruit fresh from the orchard, or enjoy country hospitality and delicious local produce at a local cafe or restaurant - the Royal Mail pub in Dunkeld has an award-winning menu that includes game and bush tucker.
After a day of exploring, why not book a bed in an historic hotel or a self-contained country cottage? You can set up camp at one of many sites, or book into an eco lodge or B&B secreted away in a peaceful bush setting.
